The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy and Marine Corps Medal to Dentalman Donald E. Berry (NSN: 2893173), United States Navy, for heroism in rescuing Private First Class Mary E. Todd, USMC, from drowning at Hunting Island State Park, South Carolina, on 2 September 1956. As a member of a swimming party, on an isolated stretch of beach, Dentalman Berry answered a call for help from Private First Class Todd who had been caught in an extremely strong undertow and forced into deep water. In absolute disregard of his own personal safety, Dentalman Berry supported and towed Private First Class Todd through a strong surf with an extremely strong undertow to a point within Fripp Inlet where he could be assisted in dragging the unconscious form of Private First Class Todd to a point of safety. He then properly administered artificial respiration. During the time he was engaged in the rescue of Private First Class Todd he was forced to swim against treacherous currents for a distance of over 1,000 yards with a drowning victim who was, at times, extremely excited and subsequently unconscious and in a state of shock. His courageous efforts, calm thinking and skillful utilization of his limited swimming ability, unquestionably saved the life of a fellow member of the Armed Forces and were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
