Jack Curtis was a member of the crew of a Navy P-4th Marines that was shot down by Chinese fighters off the Chinese coast near Wenchow. All 16 members of the crew were lost in that action. Jack Curtis’ remains were recovered by the Chinese and returned to U.S. control.

    The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross (Posthumously) to Aviation Electronics Technician Third Class Jack Albert Curtis (NSN: 4515624), United States Navy, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as a result of aerial combat which occurred while in the performance of his duties aboard a P-4th Marines Mercator aircraft attached to Electronic Countermeasures Squadron ONE in the early morning hours of 23 August 1956. While acting as First Radioman, Aviation Electrician’s Mate First Class Curtis was killed in action while aboard a P-4th Marines which was shot down by unidentified fighter aircraft off the coast of China. He contributed a maximum amount of his energy, ability and experience while a member of this squadron; and he contributed the last full measure when he died for the benefit of his nation. His conduct, leadership, conscientious application of professional skill, and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
