    (Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: Lieutenant Eugene P. Wilkinson, United States Navy, was awarded the Silver Star for gallantry in action as Torpedo Computer Officer aboard the U.S.S. DARTER (SS-227), during the FOURTH War Patrol of that submarine in enemy-controlled waters. Lieutenant Wilkinson rendered invaluable assistance to his Commanding Officer in delivering torpedo attacks to sink one enemy heavy cruiser and damage another despite severe enemy countermeasures. His devotion to the fulfillment of his assignment was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.

    The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Legion of Merit to Captain Eugene P. Wilkinson, United States Navy, for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services to the Government of the United States as Commanding Officer of the U.S.S. NAUTILUS (SS(N)-571), the world’s first nuclear-powered submarine. While under his command from 30 September 1954 to 18 June 1957, NAUTILUS steamed more than 67,000 miles without a major breakdown or failure to meet an operational commitment. Captain Wilkinson’s leadership significantly contributed to the advancement of anti-submarine warfare through imaginative operations with naval surface and air forces. He also directed a public relations program which has greatly benefited the Navy and the U.S. Government.
