The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Private William R. Bouldin (ASN: 6945532), United States Army, for heroism at the risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy while serving with 2d Recruit Company, in rescuing a woman from drowning in Long Island Sound at New Rochelle, New York. At 12:55 a.m., 13 October 1938, on hearing cries for help, Private Bouldin unhesitatingly ran 100 yards to the water’s edge and, notwithstanding the darkness of the night and the low temperature of the rock-studded water, with utter disregard of his own safety dived, fully clothed into the water and swam about 40 yards off shore to the rescue of a woman who was in grave danger of drowning. With great difficulty due to the struggles of the woman, which carried him under several times, he succeeded in bringing her to safety, thereby saving her life. The high degree of heroism displayed by this soldier upon this occasion reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
