    Decorations U.S. Army 1862 – 1926, Supplement 3 (1940)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Private Leonard J. Beutler (ASN: 6664200), United States Army, for heroism at the risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy while serving with Headquarters Company, 14th Infantry, in rescuing an enlisted man from drowning in Gatun Lake, Republic of Panama, on 6 March 1939. When an enlisted man swimming in Gatun Lake became entangled in woods under water at a depth of about 8 feet, unable to extricate himself, and was in imminent danger of drowning, Private Beutler, with utter disregard of his personal safety, immediately swam to his assistance. After extricating the drowning man from the entangling vegetation, Private Beutler with great difficulty succeeded in towing the almost unconscious, struggling man to safety, thereby saving his life. The heroism displayed by Private Beutler on this occasion reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
