The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Captain (Chemical Warfare Reserve) Benjamin T. Anuskewicz, United States Army, for heroism at the risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy on the night of 7 – 9 July 1935, at Oxford, New York, while serving as company commander of the Civilian Conservation Corps Company No. 1282, Camp S-68. A cloudburst occurred which resulted in a disastrous and destructive flood. Captain Anuskewicz, realizing the dangers to life and property, organized his command to patrol the roads in the area surrounding the camp in order to warn automobilists of washed-out bridges and the inhabitants likely to be endangered by the flood, and to rescue those who had not been warned in time. When the bridge over Geneganstlet Creak was washed out, Captain Anuskewicz, disregarding his own safety, plunged into the raging current and, after much difficulty swam to the opposite shore in time to notify the occupants of several cars that the bridge had collapsed.
