The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Lieutenant Commander George Washington Bolt, United States Navy, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight on 1 March 1951 as Pilot of a helicopter in Helicopter Utility Squadron ONE (HU-1), Detachment 11, temporarily attached to the U.S.S. SAINT PAUL (CA-73), during operations against the enemy in the Korean Theater. He volunteered for a flight to rescue a United States Air Force Pilot who was downed behind enemy lines near the Han River. As he approached and searched to locate the pilot, he was driven off two times by intense machine gun and small arms fire, but he resolutely approached a third time, and in spite of the enemy fire, he succeeded in locating and promptly rescuing the wounded pilot. His superb airmanship, determination and cool courage in the face of great danger were directly responsible for the successful rescue mission and reflected great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
