The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Bronze Star Medal with Combat “V” (Posthumously) to Hospitalman John Joseph Szwajkos (NSN: 2351446), United States Navy, for heroic achievement in connection with operations against the enemy while serving as a Corpsman attached to a Marine Infantry Company of the FIRST Marine Division (Reinforced), in action against enemy aggressor forces in Korea on 8 December 1950. Hospitalman Szwajkos displayed outstanding professional skill, courage and initiative in the performance of his duties. When his company was attacking a numerically superior enemy in a blinding snow storm, heavy casualties were suffered. Fearlessly and with complete disregard for his own personal safety, he repeatedly exposed himself to the heavy and accurate enemy small arms, machine gun and mortar fire to move among the Marine casualties, administering first aid and assisting in their evacuation. As the enemy fire increased in intensity, his company was forced to take cover, however he continued to move among the casualties administering aid and comfort until mortally wounded by enemy small arms fire while administering aid to a severely wounded Marine. He heroically gave his life for his country. His unselfish devotion to duty and aggressive actions in sub-zero temperatures were an inspiration to all members of his company, and materially aided the Marine casualties in receiving medical aid much earlier than would otherwise have been possible. Hospitalman Szwajkos’ initiative and courageous actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
