Dyes, United States Navy, was awarded the Navy and Marine Corps Medal (Posthumously) for heroism at the risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy while trying to save the life of a friend. When a companion was caught in an undertow near the Beach Hotel, St. Augustine, Florida, Metalsmith Second Class Dyes immediately plunged into the treacherous waters in answer to the call for help. He successfully battled the tide and assisted his companion to safety. Before he could reach a point of safety himself, however, Metalsmith Second Class Dyes was engulfed by the heavy see and was not seen again until his body was found near the site of the rescue.
