(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: Electrician’s Mate Third Class Howard M Worley, United States Navy, was awarded the Navy and Marine Corps Medal for heroism at the risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy while serving on the aircraft carrier U.S.S. LEYTE (CV-31), in 1950. One night in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, one of Electrician’s Mate Third Class Worley’s shipmates accidentally walked overboard and began floundering in the shark-infested waters alongside. Ignoring the danger involved, Electrician’s Mate Third Class Worley immediately jumped overboard to give assistance. Although in danger of being pulled under by the drowning man, Electrician’s Mate Third Class Worley kept him afloat until a boat arrived and hauled both men aboard.
