The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Captain (Field Artillery) John Ellsworth Adkins, Jr., United States Army, for heroism at the risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy while serving with the 12th Field Artillery, for heroism displayed on the night of 31 January 1937, at San Antonio, Texas. Upon seeing that an apparently desperate murderer, armed with a pistol, was in the act of attacking members of a party riding in a car immediately in front of the car which he was driving, Captain Adkins, with utter, disregard of his own safety, succeeded in stopping the assault and expediting the departure of the assailant. This however, was not accomplished before one of the members of the party had been killed and the others, including himself, had been wounded.
