(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: Boatswain’s Mate First Class George C. Jeffries, United States Navy, was awarded the Navy and Marine Corps Medal for heroism at the risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy. Informed that someone was in distress, Boatswain’s Mate Second Class Jeffries dived into the Sebu River near Port Lyautey, swam 150 yards in darkness through a treacherous current and located a man floundering in the water near an overturned boat. Boatswain’s Mate Second Class Jeffries pulled the victim back to the boat and held him afloat until a rescue boat arrived. By his courage in saving the life of a French Moroccan, he aided in maintaining harmonious relations with the citizens of a foreign country.
