The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Robert Allen Arnold (MCSN: 2128295), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with Supply Company, Force Logistic Support Group Alpha, Third Service Battalion, Force Logistic Command, Fleet Marine Force Pacific on 5 October 1966. During the night of 4 and 5 October 1966, Corporal Arnold and another Marine saw an aircraft flare drift over Ammunition Supply Point #1 and land in the storage area. Both men immediately ran to a vehicle and drove to the site of the burning flare. En route, they discovered a dud aircraft flare near some ammunition, they picked it up, and put it in the vehicle and continued on. Upon arrival at the fire site they observed the aircraft flare burning atop a 20-ton stack of 105-mm. howitzer ammunition, with the wooden containers already smoldering. Without regard for his personal safety, Corporal Arnold climbed on top of the ammunition stock to insure that the fire was out. He then returned to an area away from the storage site, carrying with him the dud aircraft flare previously picked up. By his quick action when confronted with this situation, Corporal Arnold averted possible destruction of the ten-thousand tons of Class V assets stored at this site, and the attendant injuries to men of this unit. By his daring actions and loyal devotion to duty in the face of personal risk, Corporal Arnold upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
