Headquarters, 1st Aviation Brigade, General Orders No. 4054 (August 26, 1967)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Specialist Fourth Class Claude H. Thomas (ASN: RA-12745730), United States Army, for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary actions above and beyond the call of duty. Specialist Fourth Class Thomas distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions while serving as crewchief of a UH-1D helicopter of the 116th Assault Helicopter Company in support of the 25th Infantry Division. During the course of the day his aircraft participated in numerous combat assaults. His extreme accuracy while delivering fire provided outstanding protection to his crew and other aircraft of the flight. During the day his aircraft was chosen for a medical evacuation mission. With complete disregard for his own personal safety he left his station in the aircraft to help the wounded personnel aboard and in the face of intense enemy fire completed loading the casualties and returned to his station where he was struck in the right leg by enemy fire. Though wounded, he refused to leave his post and continued to man his weapon until his aircraft was declared “out of action” due to hits received. Specialist Fourth Class Thomas’ heroic actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
