The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Captain (Infantry) Charles H. Fry, United States Army, for heroism not involving actual conflict with an armed enemy. Captain Fry, Commander of Company C, 2d Battalion, 5th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division, distinguished himself by heroism while engaged in military operations in the Republic of Vietnam on 4 August 1966. Captain Fry was commanding the lead element of the battalion which was making a combat air assault. Shortly after Captain Fry landed, a helicopter from the succeeding flight crashed on a slope at the edge of the landing zone. The helicopter fell on its side in a very unstable position. Ignoring the possibility of the helicopter bursting into flames and exploding due to its ruptured fuel tank, Captain Fry voluntarily rushed to the scene of the accident and assisted in removing personnel from the wreckage. As the crew emerged, the downed aircraft moved slightly revealing a man pinned underneath. Completely disregarding his own personal safety, Captain Fry immediately crawled under the lower side of the helicopter and braced it with his back while three men began digging the pinned man out. With the assistance of others who had gathered around the wreckage, Captain Fry raised the helicopter enough for the man to escape. Captain Fry’s prompt and courageous action in this emergency was in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflects great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
