The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Specialist Fourth Class Robert Thomas Rose (ASN: RA-12789564), United States Army, for gallantry in action in the Republic of Vietnam on 22 February 1970. Specialist Rose distinguished himself while serving as team leader of a six man long range patrol in Company L (Ranger) (Airmobile), 75th Infantry, 101st Airborne Division, near Quang Tri Province, Republic of Vietnam. While setting up in a night defensive position, Specialist Rose detected two North Vietnamese Army soldiers approaching his position. He warned his comrades and engaged the insurgents, as small arms fire came at them from three directions. He immediately called for armed helicopter support while moving to a better vantage point. Despite being subjected to intense enemy fire, he continued to direct both the armed helicopters and an extraction helicopter into the area. He continued to direct the supporting fire in close to his team as he led them to the extraction point. Specialist Rose’s outstanding leadership under enemy fire was responsible for the safe extraction of the team and the success of the mission. Specialist Rose’s personal bravery and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
