The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant “Eddie” Eduardus Anthony Winkleman (ASN: 18847297), United States Army, for gallantry in action on 3 February 1970, while serving as a squad leader with Company E, 2d Battalion, 14th Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division in the Republic of Vietnam. While on a reconnaissance operation, elements of Company E came in contact with a small enemy force. During the initial exchange of fire, Sergeant Winkleman was seriously wounded. Despite his wounds and with complete disregard for his own safety, Sergeant Winkleman refused medical treatment until others in his squad were treated. As he waited for treatment, Sergeant Winkleman directed and coordinated the efforts of his men until reinforcements were alerted. His valorous actions contributed immeasurably to the success of the mission. Sergeant Winkleman’s bravery, aggressiveness, and devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, the 25th Infantry Division and the United States Army.
