The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Gary L. Opela, United States Army, for gallantry in action on 24 July 1970, while serving with Company B, 2d Battalion, 27th Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division in the Republic of Vietnam. While established in their night lager defensive position, an attempt was made by a large enemy force to penetrate the perimeter of an element of Company B. After detecting the approaching aggressors, Sergeant Opela quickly alerted the element and initiated fire on the enemy force. As the insurgents returned intense fire, Sergeant Opela exposed himself to great danger as he directed suppressive fire on their positions. Further exposing himself to hostile fire, Sergeant Opela directed air and artillery strikes on the hostiles as well as coordinating quick evacuation of the friendly casualties. His valorous actions contributed immeasurably to the success of the mission. The bravery and devotion to duty exhibited by Sergeant Opela are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, the 25th Infantry Division and the United States Army.
