The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant Albert Nywening, Jr. (ASN: 32064983), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company A, 13th Infantry Regiment, 8th Infantry Division, during World War II. An aid man was wounded in his attempt to rescue a wounded platoon leader lying in the open road. Twice exposing himself to intense enemy machine gun fire, Sergeant Nywening, without regard for his personal safety, went to the rescue and succeeded in carrying both of the wounded men to cover. He then returned to his unit and continued its direction in the attack.
