Shoshana Nyree Johnson was born in the Republic of Panama to Panamanian parents. After moving to El Paso, Texas, she was a JROTC cadet in 1991, and an Andress High School graduate. She attended the University of Texas at El Paso, and later joined the US Army in September 1998. Officially, she was the first black female POW in U.S. war history.

    Specialist Shoshana Nyree Johnson, United States Army, was captured after her convoy of the 507th Maintenance Company was ambushed by Iraqi Forces on 23 March 2003, during Operation IRAQI FREEDOM, and was held as a Prisoner of War until her recovery on 13 April 2003.
