The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant Commander [then Lieutenant] Eugene Joseph Chancy (NSN: 0-641517), United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action on 21 June 1966 while serving as a pilot in Fighter Squadron TWO HUNDRED ELEVEN (VF-211), embarked in U.S.S. HANCOCK (CVA-19). Participating in a flight of four F-8E Crusader aircraft conducting RESCAP for a downed pilot, Lieutenant Commander Chancy remained with the division leader after two aircraft in the flight were detached due to low fuel state. When two sections of North Vietnamese MiG-17 jet fighters attacked his section, Lieutenant Commander Chancy engaged one of the sections and displayed outstanding airmanship, aggressiveness and bravery in pursuing a MiG through a series of maneuvers at low altitude despite the fact that he was unable to optimize the use of his afterburner due to low fuel state. He subsequently destroyed the MiG with 20-mm. cannon fire while meeting it head-on. With less than ten minutes of fuel remaining, he proceeded to the coast where he skillfully refueled his aircraft from an aerial tanker. Lieutenant Commander Chancy’s heroic actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
