The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Lieutenant Jack Evans, Jr. (NSN: 0-124499), United States Naval Reserve, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as Patrol Commander of a Navy Liberator plane on ten combat photographic flights from 4 April 1945 to 10 August 1945. Eight of the flights were over home territory of the enemy where much of the area photographed was heavily defended by anti-aircraft concentrations and fighter planes. Heavy anti-aircraft shells burst near his plane on three occasions. On seven flights he flew the lead plane and was responsible for the planning and execution of the missions. His leadership and skilled airmanship were responsible for securing many high quality photographs of great value to the allied cause and were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
