The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private Donald Olson (ASN: 37588207), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 319th Infantry Regiment, 80th Infantry Division, in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States on 9 January 1945 in Luxembourg. During one of the numerous attacks against Dahl, Luxembourg, on 9 January 1945, Private Olson was serving as a rifleman in an infantry company. As an enemy tank advanced to within thirty yards of his position, he crawled under intense fire to the vehicle and attempted to destroy it with hand grenades. Although his efforts were unsuccessful, the tank in withdrawing became an easy target for anti-tank fire and was destroyed. As the crew abandoned the tank, Private Olson wounded and captured two of the enemy. His courage, bravery, and sincere devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
