The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Benjamin S. Grossman (ASN: 0-1322783), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 317th Infantry Regiment, 80th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Germany, on 3 April 1945. Near Harleshausen, Germany, when his company was harassed by sniper fire from a nearby woods, Lieutenant Grossman voluntarily led a skillful enveloping move to drive the enemy from the woods. While in pursuit his platoon met and fought another large hostile force, in which Lieutenant Grossman was wounded. Despite the pain he led his unit to safety and supervised evacuation of wounded. His courage and initiative exemplify the highest traditions of the armed forces of the United States.
