The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant Daniel W. McCarthy (ASN: 34490042), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company H, 2d Battalion, 318th Infantry Regiment, 80th Infantry Division, in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States on 15 March 1945 in Germany. While attempting to deliver supplies to embattled and surrounded comrades, Staff Sergeant McCarthy and his companions were subjected to hostile machine gun fire and were dispersed. With disregard for safety, he exposed himself to rescue a wounded comrade and then formed the men into a fighting unit to destroy the opposition and open the supply route. Staff Sergeant McCarthy’s leadership and aggressiveness were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
