The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant [then Private First Class] Wilfred W. Herr (ASN: 38433443), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company A, 1st Battalion, 319th Infantry Regiment, 80th Infantry Division, in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States on 10 September 1944 in France. At Liverdun, France, intense fire from two hostile machine guns delayed Sergeant Herr’s company. With disregard for safety, he charged one emplacement under the deadly fire, captured the gun and killed the crew. Turning the captured gun on the other enemy position, he destroyed the second gun. Sergeant Herr’s courage and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
