The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class James R. Dudley (ASN: 33652881), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company G, 2d Battalion, 318th Infantry Regiment, 80th Infantry Division, in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States on 10 February 1945 in Germany. At the Sauer River crossing, Private First Class Dudley, a rifleman, observed his squad being harassed by fire from a distant pillbox. With disregard for safety, he charged through the hostile concentration over 250 yards of hazardous terrain to boldly assault the position and capture the hostile troops. Private First Class Dudley’s outstanding courage and devotion were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
