The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Franklin O. Berkhouse (ASN: 33948065), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company B, 1st Battalion, 317th Infantry Regiment, 80th Infantry Division, in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States on 13 March 1945 in Germany. During the hazardous fighting near Waldholzbach, Germany, Private First Class Berkhouse, despite severe hostile fire, advanced far ahead of his comrades. From his precarious position, he courageously destroyed two enemy pillboxes, killed five of the hostile force, and contributed immeasurably in routing the enemy. Private First Class Berkhouse’s courage and aggressiveness were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
