The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Second Lieutenant [then Technical Sergeant] John L. Weiss (ASN: 0-2026186), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 318th Infantry Regiment, 80th Infantry Division, in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States on 11 April 1945 in Germany. Without assistance, Lieutenant Weiss made a detailed reconnaissance in dangerous enemy-held territory, and returned to lead his men in a highly successful attack upon a hostile unit of ammunition vehicles and men. The aggressiveness and intelligent leadership displayed by Lieutenant Weiss on this mission, during which not one of his men was lost, resulted in completely routing the enemy force. Lieutenant Weiss’ bravery and zealous devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
