The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant [then Sergeant] Paul F. Stader (ASN: 15105038), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 80th Cavalry Reconnaissance Troop, 80th Infantry Division, in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States on 19 January 1945 in Luxembourg. While voluntarily leading a patrol, Staff Sergeant Stader was seriously wounded by the explosion of an anti-personnel mine. Almost immediately, intense enemy fire was concentrated on their position. Despite his painful wounds, Staff Sergeant Stader set up a machine gun position to cover the successful withdrawal of his comrades and refused evacuation until his fellow soldiers were properly cared fore. The outstanding gallantry and zealous devotion to duty displayed by Staff Sergeant Stader are a tribute to the finest ideals of the armed forces of the United States.
