The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class [then Private] Keith A. Havey (ASN: 31401643), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with 80th Cavalry Reconnaissance Troop, 80th Infantry Division, in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States on 9 April 1945 in Germany. When his platoon was pinned down by raking enemy machine gun fire near Ballstadt, Germany, Private First Class Havey moved into a dangerously exposed position, wounded one gunner with his rifle, and threw a hand grenade which effectively silenced the enemy gun and killed two members of the crew. The gallantry and aggressiveness displayed by Private First Class Havey were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
