The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Technical Sergeant [then Sergeant] Michael C. Fustish (ASN: 33355147), United States Army, for heroism not involving actual conflict with an enemy while serving with Headquarters Company, 3d Battalion, 317th Infantry Regiment, 80th Infantry Division, in Austria on 9 May 1945. When a defective white phosphorus grenade exploded in the battalion ammunition dump, Technical Sergeant Fustish immediately observed that other munitions and nearby workmen were endangered. With disregard for personal safety, and despite several painful burns, he carried the flaming box from the area. Technical Sergeant Fustish’s alertness and exceptional display of bravery were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
