The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry), [then Second Lieutenant] John W. Ostrem (ASN: 0-558387), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 317th Infantry Regiment, 80th Infantry Division, in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States on 21 February 1945 in Germany. During a fierce enemy tank attack at Halsdorf, Germany, Lieutenant Ostrem realized the necessity of bringing mortar fire on the hostile vehicles. Immediately, he charged through the severe fire over one thousand yards of exposed terrain to direct effective fire, repulse the attack, and allow his battalion to advance. Lieutenant Ostrem’s initiative and courage were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
