The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Michael V. Konyk (ASN: 13111802), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company C, 1st Battalion, 318th Infantry Regiment, 80th Infantry Division, in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States on 18 August 1944 in France. Near Argentan, France, Private First Class Konyk, with utter disregard for personal safety, exposed himself to severe enemy fire to ride on top a tank and direct fire that destroyed a hostile assault gun. When his tank was hit and he was hurled fifteen feet in a dazed condition, he again displayed outstanding courage, by rescuing four comrades from the blazing vehicle. Private First Class Konyk’s bravery and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
