The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Charles H. Haynes (ASN: 35050335), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Headquarters Company, 317th Infantry Regiment, 80th Infantry Division, in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States on 4 October 1944 in France. Near Sivry, France, intense enemy machine gun fire delayed Corporal Haynes’ rifle company in its mission to relieve another rifle company. With disregard for personal safety, Corporal Haynes crawled over exposed terrain through the severe fire, located the hostile position, and destroyed it with a grenade. Corporal Haynes aggressiveness and devotion allowed his company to advance and was in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflects great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
