Headquarters, 80th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 245 (October 4, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Darnell H. Green (ASN: 37540604), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company H, 2d Battalion, 319th Infantry Regiment, 80th Infantry Division, in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States on 16 April 1945 in Germany. At Gera, Germany, Corporal Green, on his own initiative, exposed himself to severe enemy machine gun fire to locate hostile guns. After an ineffective fire fight, he obtained a machine gun squad, placed them in an advantageous position, and again exposed himself to withering fire to direct the machine gun crew in destroying the hostile position. Corporal Green’s courage and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
