The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Harold J. Egan (ASN: 42136724), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company C, 1st Battalion, 319th Infantry Regiment, 80th Infantry Division, in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States on 7 February 1945 in Germany. Near Wallendorf, Germany, fierce fire from a hostile pillbox temporarily delayed Private First Class Egan’s company and wounded the first scout. Displaying initiative and outstanding bravery, Private First Class Egan crawled over exposed and fire-raked terrain to destroy the emplacement with hand grenades and relieve his company from a precarious situation. Private First Class Egan’s gallantry and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
