The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant (then Sergeant) Lawrence S. Camp (ASN: 33371547), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company D, 1st Battalion, 318th Infantry Regiment, 80th Infantry Division, in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States on 26 December 1944 in Belgium. South of Honville, Belgium, assaulting rifle troops were temporarily delayed by severe enemy machine gun fire at 300 yards range. With disregard for personal safety, Staff Sergeant Camp led his squad into position, and then, alone, crawled two hundred yards under severe enemy fire, charged the remaining distance, and destroyed the hostile gun and crew. Staff Sergeant Camp’s gallantry and aggressiveness were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
