The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Richard H. Bethin (ASN: 32842293), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company C, 1st Battalion, 319th Infantry Regiment, 80th Infantry Division, in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States on 7 February 1945 in Germany. At the hazardous Our River crossing, Private First Class Bethin, with disregard for personal safety, braved severe enemy fire in crossing exposed and mined terrain to deliver blood plasma to his company. Later, despite a painful wound, he again exposed himself, to assist aid men in evacuating casualties. Private First Class Bethin’s thoughtfulness and gallantry contributed immeasurably in saving many lives, and was in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflects great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
