The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry), [then First Lieutenant] William A. Beisner (ASN: 0-1312113), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 317th Infantry Regiment, 80th Infantry Division, in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States on 13 March 1945 in Germany. Under cover of darkness, Captain Beisner skillfully led his company into position to attack Greimerath, Germany. After making a reconnaissance in exposed terrain, he led the attack until heavy fire necessitated dispersing the men. Then, continuously exposing himself to severe fire, he directed his men until he was seriously wounded. Captain Beisner’s courageous leadership and gallantry were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
