The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Paul L. Axel (ASN: 0-1325467), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 318th Infantry Regiment, 80th Infantry Division, in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States on 7 February 1945 in Germany. At the height of the hazardous Sauer River crossing, when the company commander and several other officers became casualties, Lieutenant Axel assumed command. Under his inspirational and courageous leadership, the company achieved the objective and successfully defended it against fanatical enemy counterattacks. Lieutenant Axel’s gallantry and untiring devotion were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
