The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant [then Private] Thomas E. Hannon, Jr. (ASN: 33712455), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company C, 1st Battalion, 319th Infantry Regiment, 80th Infantry Division, in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States on 9 February 1945 in Germany. During the hazardous Our River crossing, liaison planes dropped medical supplies to attacking troops. With disregard for personal safety, Sergeant Hannon advanced over exposed and mined terrain, through severe enemy fire, to pick up the blood plasma and deliver it to the temporary aid stations. Sergeant Hannon’s gallantry and sincere devotion to his comrades and duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
