The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant [then Private First Class] Clarence E. Day (ASN: 35596824), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company C, 1st Battalion, 319th Infantry Regiment, 80th Infantry Division, in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States on 9 February 1945 in Germany. At the Our River, intense fire from an enemy pillbox delayed Sergeant Day’s company and hampered the evacuation of the wounded. After maneuvering to within 20 yards of the position, Sergeant Day, disregarding personal safety, exposed himself to the enemy, charged the pillbox, and destroyed it with hand grenades. The gallantry, initiative, and devotion displayed by Sergeant Day were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
