The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Sergeant Joseph W. Prost (ASN: 36041559), United States Army, for heroism not involving actual conflict with an enemy while serving with Headquarters Battery, 313th Field Artillery Battalion, 80th Infantry Division, in France on 5 November 1944. While policing an area for salvage and ammunition near Atton, France, a pile of shells exploded and injured Sergeant Prost and his comrade. Despite his painful wound and flying shell fragments, Sergeant Prost voluntarily carried his seriously wounded companion to safety and administered aid thereby saving his life. Sergeant Prost’s courage and devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
