The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Howard E. Grant, Jr. (ASN: 36186584), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company B, 305th Engineer Battalion, 80th Infantry Division, in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States on 24 December 1944 in Luxembourg. Leading his patrol through enemy lines, Sergeant Grant infiltrated to enemy gun positions that he was to destroy. After making a reconnaissance of his objective, he skillfully led his men in placing high explosives on the hostile equipment, and despite the nearness of the enemy, ignited the charges and destroyed four guns, three vehicles, and the crews. Sergeant Grant’s courage and leadership were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
