The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Alfred F. Cannizzaro (ASN: 12124139), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company H, 2d Battalion, 318th Infantry Regiment, 80th Infantry Division, in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States on 15 September 1944 in France. At Mousson Hill, France, during a fierce enemy attack, Private First Class Cannizzaro found the observer and the driver of a half-track seriously wounded. Immediately, he loaded them in a vehicle and drove through severe fire concentrations. After reaching a river he braved the raging current to obtain a boat and evacuate his comrades. Private First Class Cannizzaro’s gallantry and initiative were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
