The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Private First Class Jerome G. Naeyert (ASN: 36560574), United States Army, for heroism not involving actual conflict with an enemy of the United States while serving with Company D, 317th Infantry Regiment, 80th Infantry Division, in Austria on 5 June 1945. While practicing for Division Motor Boat Races on Lake Gmunden, Austria, a boat containing Private First Class Naeyert and an officer capsized, throwing the occupants into the icy water. Although suffering from cramps, Private First Class Naeyert immediately located the drowning officer and saved his life. The heroism and courage displayed by Private First Class Naeyert are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
