The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Technical Sergeant William H. Shrader (ASN: 33235109), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company F, 2d Battalion, 318th Infantry Regiment, 80th Infantry Division, in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States on 15 April 1945 in Germany. In order to establish an outpost near Erfurt, Germany, Technical Sergeant Shrader crawled more than 300 yards across exposed terrain where he accurately directed mortar fire upon four enemy machine gun emplacements thereby completely destroying them. His complete disregard for personal safety and gallant courage were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
