The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Sergeant James W. Dooley (ASN: 34289817), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company I, 3d Battalion, 318th Infantry Regiment, 80th Infantry Division, in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States on 8 November 1944 in France. When his company was stopped by enemy fire, First Sergeant Dooley advanced over 200 yards under intense machine gun fire to direct mortar fire which resulted in knocking out four enemy machine guns and killing 20 Germans. The gallant courage displayed by First Sergeant Dooley was in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflects great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
