The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant [then Sergeant] Leo A. Yemola (ASN: 33349096), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the Anti-Tank Company, 319th Infantry Regiment, 80th Infantry Division, in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States on 7 January 1945 in Luxembourg. While serving as mine platoon squad leader during the severe fighting at Dahl, Luxembourg, Staff Sergeant Yemola, with disregard for his personal safety, under heavy enemy fire, organized and led his men in laying a mine field 400 yards beyond friendly outposts. As a result of his heroic action, a severe enemy counterattack by tank and infantry forces was repelled. Staff Sergeant Yemola’s outstanding leadership, courage, and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
